Perhaps realizing that there is strength in numbers, variegated objects have huddled together, in orderly fashion, in Ceal Floyer’s work “Helix”. The artist has fitted these objects into the holes of an architect’s ruler, as if ascribing each of them to its true origin. Standing at attention, they form an inventory that adheres to very strict but absurd rules, as in another piece by Floyer: the “Monochrome Till Receipt (White)”, 1999, pinned to the wall, the color white serving as the common thread to all purchased items.
