Oil on canvas
Collection Ginette Moulin / Guillaume Houzé, Paris
Courtesy Markus Schinwald et Galerie Yvon Lambert, Paris‐New York
This picture is one of a series of 19th century portraits that Markus Schinwald has retouched by making additions to the faces. Masks, veils, fillets and bandages make their appearance without seemingly disturbing the characters: prosthetics that constrain, make silent, blind or as here, with a few «bubbles», isolate a Rose vibrant with an immediate reality. The artist buys the portraits at auctions or on eBay, then restores and changes them. In the end, refined by an expert hand, they blend the strange with the familiar.
