With Provisoirement sans titre (Provisionally Untitled), Mathieu Mercier reinterprets a composition by Mondrian with a rather artisanal version of the original. By lending the picture a torn look at the bottom, the artist returns to the idea advanced by the earlier Dutch artist that “the canvas becomes a fragment of a larger canvas.” Desecrating the famous formal grammar of Neoplasticism, Mercier pulls off a double reappropriation of an icon of modernity that has also become a popular motif over the years through the work of graphic artists of every stripe.
