As if by magic, the “Vacuum Cleaner Chair” designed by Studio Makking & Bey turns into a chair, becoming incapable of any actual vacuuming. With this detournement, the artist deprives a household appliance of its primary function and gives it a new one. In so doing, he also elevates dust from garbage to unexpected upholstery material. The structure comes alive on its own volition, as if recycling had become an impediment to functionality. By coming to life before the eyes of a puzzled user, it defies all the research conducted by designers on ergonomics and handiness.
