Born in 1978 in Annecy, France. He lives and works in New York.
Davide Balula builds his work around visual, sound, electronic and sculptural displays. His output lies on the fringe of both the artistic and the scientific, where sound, rhythm and movement progress together towards a technological and organic material. At first glance manufactured objects and technical materials give the impression of a cold mechanism that the delicacy of the drawings and the presence of vegetable matter, musical instruments and sounds shift towards a fragile, poetic world.
Davide Balula's multisensory practice explores chance encounters, random patterns and the materiality of time. Working in a variety of media - such as sound, installation and painting - his practice can take the form of recording devices, unusual measuring tools or scientific experiments. He regularly collaborates with conductors, dancers and musicians in improvisation performances and concerts. His works and performances have been presented at Performa 09, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, MoMA PS1, New York.
