Wood, glue, paint
Collection Ginette Moulin / Guillaume Houzé, Paris
Galerie Chez Valentin, Paris
This strange puzzle is made up of wood offcuts from some of Joe Scanlan’s other sculptures. Piecing them together to form a new object, the artist proposes a radical and inverted reading of Cubism, since instead of breaking down reality into small cubes as Braque or Picasso managed to do, Scanlan composes a new reality with his wood cubes. This “recycling” also pushes viewers to think about the value of the art object, just as it suggests a sharp critique of the market economy at work in the world of art.
