Narrative and in particular what surrounds it—Joe Scanlan’s ability to generate rumors, his credibility and the impact of fiction on reality lie at the heart of the artist’s work. Along with the sculptures he creates, Scanlan exhibits paintings done from the wood offcuts lying scattered around his studio floor. Bearing the signature of one Donnelle Woolford, a fictional woman artist, they question the relationship the viewer entertains with the work of art and notably the importance the artist’s name plays in our understanding of that work.
